“BuyWay” Sale
Aug 11-13

Be sure to save the dates of August 11th through the 13th for the granddaddy sale of them all, the Lincoln Highway “Buyway Sale.” This sale runs along the route of the Lincoln Highway across the state and right through Wayne County, including the Village of Dalton! Many local businesses along the route have joined in the fun with sidewalk sales, discount prices and special menu items. Remember to watch for signs for sales slightly off the Lincoln Highway corridor; you may be surprised how worthwhile these sales can be. The sale is quickly becoming a “must do” event for antique and second hand shop owners as well as girlfriends looking for a unique weekend getaway or those seeking a special one of a kind item and collectors.
The concept of the garage sale is nothing new, but making them more popular than ever are the “trash to treasure” shows on the Home and Garden and DIY Networks. Also helping to keep salvageable goodies out of our landfills is the internet sensation, Pinterest. Pinterest can help you turn an old rowboat into a coffee table or an old ladder back chair into a towel bar for your bathroom, in just one afternoon!
The history of the Lincoln Highway began in 1913 with a proposed route announced by founding members, whom, by the way were all leaders in the motor car industry. This first coast-to-coast route began in Times Square in New York and ended 3,389 miles in Lincoln Park, San Francisco. While traveling this route, take time to notice buildings and businesses that once serviced travelers along the route, such as motor inns, drive-in restaurants and filling stations. If you would like information on the Lincoln Highway Sale or the history of the road, visit their website at www.historicbyway.com.

If you find yourself in Wayne County the Saturday of the LHW Sale we’d like to suggest a trip to Italy, or at least a trip to Downtown Wooster for the Festa Italiana celebration. This biannual festival, on the square in Downtown Wooster, celebrates the Italian Heritage of Wooster through displays, music, food, wine, car show and crafts. If you would like more information on these or other area events and attractions visit the Wayne County Convention and Visitors Bureau website at http://wccvb.com.

BUY-WAY BARGAINS (AND HISTORY) GALORE

LHW (1)Jacki Chamberlain, CTC, Marketing Specialist
Wayne County Convention & Visitors Bureau

At the turn of the 20th century, there were virtually no paved roads outside of a city limit, by 1910; automobiles were good for a short drive as long as you didn’t stray too far. Gas stations and auto repair shops were far and few between, automobiles were simply a toy for the upper class.

The history of the Lincoln Highway officially began on September 14, 1913, with an announcement of the proposed route by industry leaders Henry B. Joy of the Packard Motor Company, Frank A. Seiberling of Goodyear Rubber, and Carl Fisher, founder of Prest-O-Lite Company, maker of car headlamps.

The first coast-to-coast route began at Times Square in New York and ended 3,389 miles westward in San Francisco. The route of the highway was marked with red, white, and blue strips-sometimes painted on utility poles.

The Lincoln Highway in 1928, as final tribute to Abraham Lincoln, set nearly 2,500 concert posts by the Boy Scouts of America in cities and towns along the highway. With 241 set in Ohio, some of which can still be found along the highway yet today.

We invite you to join thousands of fellow bargain hunters on August 13, 14, and 15, for the Lincoln Highway Buy-Way Yard Sale, across the state of Ohio and right through Wayne County! In its 11th year of sales, the Lincoln Highway Corridor Association has watched the number of sales rise each year and this year promises not to disappoint. Make sure to visit the Mega-Sale at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, Habitat for Humanity Restore, Downtown Wooster and the Village of Dalton.

We hope you find this short history lesson beneficial as you travel the highway looking for bargains. Take notice of the buildings that were once thriving businesses, look for remains of old motor court motels, drive in restaurants or filing stations-we hope you enjoy traveling an important part of America’s past!
